Job Description:
DutiesThe CDC utilizes Direct/Expedited Hire Authorities to fill
vacancies in a variety of occupations. This vacancy is a REPOSITORY
of applications. Duties and responsibilities vary and may increase
according to the grade level of the position. Applications may be
periodically referred to hiring managers both during the open
period and after the closing date. Because of the large number of
applications anticipated, applicants' status will not be
updated.This public notice will be used to fill the positions
listed below at multiple locations.
- Research General Engineer: Grades GS-11 through GS-15Applicant
Expiration: Applications will expire 4 months after
submission/resubmission. To remain eligible for consideration,
reapplying is required.Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Providing advice, consultation, and recommendations to
management on the need to include the subject matter expertise and
involvement of engineers in other engineering science disciplines
such as electrical, mechanical, civil, etc.
- Performing scheduling and layout of operations and inspection
and surveillance of materials, methods, and equipment used in
construction.
- Developing technical data regarding materials, sizes,
qualities, dimensions, quantities, and costs to be incorporated
into formal specifications.
- Providing guidance, development and coordination for the
planning, engineering design, and oversight of maintenance
projects.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentDue to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) process enhancement to use
Shared Certificates throughout the Agency, some of the requirements
below may differ:
- US Citizenship is required.
- Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered or exempt
from Selective Service ( http://www.sss.gov ).
- May be subject to a Background/Security Investigation. Security
clearance level may differ from the position announced when
certificates are shared.
- CDC participates in the USCIS Electronic Employment Eligibility
Verification Program ( E-Verify ). If selected, CDC will determine
your employment eligibility using your social security number.
- Direct deposit is required.
- One-year probationary period may be required.
- This position may be subject to a Collective Bargaining
Agreement.
- This public notice may be used to fill supervisory or
managerial positions and selectees may be subject to 1 year
supervisory or managerial probationary period.
- Positions may be filled as permanent or term appointments.
- This position may be subject to the OGE Financial Disclosure
requirements of the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 (P.L. 95-521).
CDC inspires public confidence in its trust responsibilities and
mission by maintaining high ethical principles. If selected, you

Report (OGE Form 450) to determine if a conflict or an appearance
of a conflict exists between your financial interest and your

- In accordance with Executive Order 12564 of September 15, 1986,
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is A Drug-Free
Federal Workplace. This position may require a Drug Test and be
subject to Random Drug Testing. The position may require the
submission of a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to
appointment and be subject to reasonable suspicion and
post-accident drug testing upon hiring. If required to submit to
urinalysis, the appointment to the position will be contingent upon
a negative test result.QualificationsBasic Qualifications:Degree:
Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a
bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one
program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and
integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year
physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of
engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength
of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics,
hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits;
(f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and
aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable
area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics,
heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.ORCombination of
education and experience -- college-level education, training,
and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge
of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering,
and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of
the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to
one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background
must be demonstrated by one of the following:
- Professional registration or licensure -- Current registration
as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or
licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the
District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of
qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such
registration by means other than written test (e.g., State
grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions
that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their
registration.
- Written Test - Evidence of having successfully passed the
Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written
test required for professional registration by an engineering
licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia,
Guam and Puerto Rico.
- Specified Academic Courses - Successful completion of at least
60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and
engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the
basic requirements. The courses must be fully acceptable toward
meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described
above.
- Related Curriculum - Successful completion of a curriculum
leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field,
(e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture,
computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be
acceptable in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided
the applicant has had at least 1 year of professional engineering
experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and
guidance. Ordinarily there should be either an established plan of
intensive training to develop professional engineering competence,
or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience,
e.g. in interdisciplinary positions. (The above examples or related
curricula are not all-inclusive.)Minimum Qualifications:To qualify
at the GS-11 grade level, you must have at least one year of
specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level,
which must include the following experience: conducting research
related to health and safety issues in various occupational safety
and health activities.OR have completed a Master's or equivalent
graduate degree in engineering from an accredited college or
university.OR have a combination of education and specialized
experience that together meets 100% of the qualification
requirement for this position.To qualify at the GS-12 grade level,
you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or
equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, which must include the
following experience: conducting research related to health and
safety issues in various occupational safety and health activities;
planning and conducting tests; and assisting in the collection,
analysis and interpretation of data from field, laboratory or
modeling studies.OR have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral
degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.OR
have a combination of education and specialized experience that
together meets 100% of the qualification requirement for this
position.To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at
least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the
GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience:
designing, initiating, and conducting research related to health
and safety issues in various occupational safety and health
activities; designing questionnaires and other data collection
instruments; and selecting and applying appropriate statistical
methods to the analysis of the occupational worker injury and
illness data.To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at
least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the
GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience:
designing, developing, evaluating, and enhancing engineering
solutions to reduce or prevent occupational exposures to chemical,
biological, radiological, and/or physical hazards.To qualify at the
GS-15 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized
experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, which must
include the following experience: developing and establishing
engineering solutions for the prevention of occupational injuries
or disease; and directing/administering a research program.For
research positions, an evaluation of the scientific contributions,
recognition and professional standing of the researcher as they
relate to the position being filled will be made to determine
qualifications. Candidates should include all pertinent information
